Some key points for any player defending off the side of a ruck or maul are:
- Be behind the rearmost foot so you don't give away a penalty
- Communicate with your team-mates so they know who and where you are covering
- Stay low so you hit from low to high
- Ensure you don't leave a gap inside by drifting out
